It was destined to be the first Museum devoted entirely to a designer of High fashion. Cristóbal Balenciaga recognized as the most influential couturier of the XXth century, deserves this homage of his native country. But the project of a Museum in Guetaria, the people where he was born, that had to be inaugurated in 2003, is suspended because of a long process in the courts by aberrations in his management. Meanwhile, in the shallows of a block of flats of Guetaria 1.000 Balenciaga pledges remain, for years. An authentic treasure.
The centenary of the birth of Cristóbal Balenciaga was the starting point for the creation of the Foundation that takes his name. The French couturier Hubert de Givenchy was nominated a President. In November, 2001 the dukes of Palm together with Reina Fabiola of Belgium presented the foundation on a global scale in the Embassy of Spain of Paris. But this entity had already initiated the project of the creation of the Museum in Guetaria. On March 22, 2001 there was placed the first stone of the Museum, an enlargement of the palace Aldamar, a very austere nineteenth-century town but with the idea of providing it with the most modern technologies.

The motive of this election has a key sentimental background in the biography of the teacher. On one Sunday morning when Cristóbal had alone thirteen years but he was already dreaming of cloths, drawings and colors, it met for the center of Guetaria a woman who looked like to him almost a vision: target and a hat of straw was dressing a jacket suit of tusor in a veil of brown gauze. It approached the mysterious lady, who was the Marchioness of Houses Towers, and with a blow of adventurousness he asked him if he could design a suit for her because it was turning out to be capable of doing it.

This meeting for the Guetaria streets was the beginning of his career. The Marchioness of Houses Toast, that a Decroll model was dressing in that occasion, he sent to him a textile so that it was copying the original. The copy turned out to be perfect and the elegant lady sent him to Paris and communicated him with Decroll and with other designers of the epoch, between them with Cocó Chanel who would say a few years later: "Balenciaga is the only couturier capable of drawing, of cutting and of sewing he only a model”

When one spoke about the possibility of the Museum, the children of the marchioness of Houses Towers, the parents of Reina Fabiola of Belgium, they bequeathed the House for his installation. Precisely the one that would be the key piece of the same one is one of the most admired works of Balenciaga: the wedding dress of Reina Fabiola with his wide tail style cloak that was going out of the shoulders and that it converted to the sovereign piece of news into a dazzling beauty. The restoration of the valued model entrusted the designer Lorenzo Caprile.

Although Balenciaga had already found in life a firm evaluation of his work shortly after his death, in the year 72, the initiatives and homage began proliferating. His suits, authentic sculptures, were claimed by the best museums of the world In the year 73 the first exhibition was celebrated in New York. In the year 74 another alumnus “The Balenciaga world in the Circle of Fine arts of Madrid. As advance of the museum celebrated in the Kursaal the exhibition “Balenciaga: From Paris to San Sebastian” a retrospective of 150 suits that was gathering all the milestones of the creation of the couturier: the waisted suits of the 40s, the much more liberated and functional models of the 50 and his evolution of the 60 towards the volumes and the architectural forms of straight lines in the one that was including the tunic that supposed a real revolution in the world of the fashion.

But the definitive work is missing: the Museum that has created so many expectations. The Basque Parliament has already approved for unanimity the report on the aberrations detected in his management management. One speculates that this supposes the starting point to straighten the things up and that the works of the Museum go forward. Spain has this big and definitive debt to the designer who more has influenced the history of the fashion.
